Most commonly recommended vaccines for travelers

Yellow fever vaccine

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease with a severe clinical picture. Twenty-seven African countries and 13 Latin American countries are classified as high-risk countries for yellow fever. The possibility of international spread to unaffected regions remains a global health security concern and is managed through vaccination.

Typhoid vaccine

Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, usually through ingestion of contaminated food or water. The acute illness is characterized by prolonged fever, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and constipation or sometimes diarrhea. The symptoms are often nonspecific and clinically indistinguishable from other febrile illnesses. However, clinical severity varies, and severe cases can lead to serious complications or even death. It occurs primarily in association with poor sanitation and a lack of clean drinking water.

Hepatitis A vaccine

Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). The virus is primarily spread when a non-immune (or unvaccinated) person consumes food or water that has been contaminated with the feces of an infected person. The disease is closely associated with the consumption of unsafe water or food, inadequate sanitation, poor personal hygiene, and oral-anal sex.

Cholera vaccine

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Access to safe water, basic sanitation, and hygiene are essential to prevent cholera. Most people with cholera have mild to moderate diarrhea and can be treated with oral rehydration solution (ORS). However, the disease can progress rapidly, so prompt treatment is vital to save lives.

Dengue fever vaccine

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection common in warm, tropical climates. It is caused by one of four closely related dengue virus serotypes, which can cause a wide range of symptoms, including some that may require medical intervention and hospitalization. In severe cases, it can be fatal. There is no cure for the infection itself, and symptomatic treatment is used.
